Who is Emma and what is your role?

I’m Emma Dalzell (one of the company’s multiple Emmas, so also known as ‘Emma D’). I’m Head of Marketing and responsible for our communications and the wonderful, and increasingly well-known Alertacall brand.

I have over 30 years of experience in Marketing across global corporations, smaller businesses and even my own marketing agency – when I started my career in marketing, social media didn’t even exist!

Marketing covers everything from events and exhibitions, social media, website and campaigns, to direct mail. Marketing supports the business to grow through building our brilliant reputation and helping our Client Development and Customer Success teams communicate even more effectively with clients and customers to get better results. We also put together videos and support internal communications, and we work with existing clients to write case studies to showcase our brilliant technology and guides to challenge the industry to think and talk about difficult topics, such as preventing undiscovered deaths. As Head of Marketing, my role is to focus on consistently getting our brand out there, disrupting our competitors and showing the housing sector that doing things differently will be better for both them and their customers.

What does a typical day look like?

Working in Marketing is a little bit like the British weather – one moment we’re in the middle of a hailstorm being hit from all sides (usually in the run up to an event or a campaign), and the next moment the sun is shining and we’ve gathered the most amazing client or customer testimonial. The underlying breeze is all the regular things we need to get out weekly or monthly, such as social media and newsletters, analytics and planning. Once in a while, the whirlwind that is Client Development asks us to step in and support presentations or client training. Whatever the Marketing weather, I can guarantee no day (or even hour) will be the same.

What do you like most about working at Alertacall?

I came to Alertacall in 2023 because I wanted to work with a team and an organisation that truly makes a difference, every day. My background in the telecoms industry meant that I wanted a forward-thinking technology business that wasn’t afraid to do things differently and disrupt the market – and we certainly do that at Alertacall. My grandmother (much like James’ gran) was fiercely independent, and I wish I’d known about Alertacall for her; it would have made both of our lives so much easier.

Every day at Alertacall, I see our values – Reliable, Caring, Knowledgeable, Passionate and Progressive – being embodied in everything that we do, and working with people who share those values makes coming to work a pleasure!

Outside of Alertacall, what makes you tick?

I live in an old Victorian house with my husband, daughter and two dogs (a cockapoo and a giant schnoodle, who weighs 50kg!), so our house is always chaotic between the school runs, dog walks, mum taxi and everything else that comes with family life. However, when I do get some rare time to myself, I can be found in the garden where I attempt to grow cut flowers, and in my sewing room where I practice my skills as an amateur sewist. I started sewing when I was a teenager, and then took it back up again after my daughter was born. It’s my mental escape as I can’t think about anything else when I’m sewing, otherwise I end up with a sleeve sewn on the wrong way! My husband says my most used sewing tool is my stitch ripper!

Tell us one thing we might not know about you?

I was a cricket scorer well into my twenties. I was born in Yorkshire, and my dad was an avid cricketer, so I was brought up with cricket in my blood. When I was old enough, my dad said I could either score or help make the teas – I can barely boil a kettle, so scoring it was! I once scored for the ITV sports team, and have met many well-known cricketers over the years, including Freddie Flintoff!
