As summer faded away, events started to pick up again in September, and the UK Housing sector came together in Liverpool for The Housing Community Summit.

Our CEO and Founder, James Batchelor MBE, took to the Fringe stage on day 2 of the event to discuss ‘Preventing Undiscovered Deaths and Increasing Customer Contact‘ alongside sector leaders, Rachel Crownshaw, Group Managing Director, Communities at Places for People, Kathryn Fox-Rogers, Director of Housing and Customer Services at Sanctuary Group, and Jacque Allen, CEO of Your Housing – chaired by Matt Baird of The Social Housing Round Table.

It was a very informative and well attended session (standing room only!) in which panellists shared their organisations’ actions to help prevent undiscovered deaths by increasing two-way customer contact, and demonstrating how customers, colleagues and organisations benefit from higher levels of engagement. There was great insight from the panel and questions from the audience – unfortunately there just wasn’t enough time to answer them all!

As a much needed follow on from the insightful panel session, James took to the virtual stage with Matt Baird for a leadership-focused session of The Social Housing Round Table, with a focus on sharing five lessons he learned from talking to 50 social housing leaders.

James recently updated his guide – ‘Preventing Undiscovered Deaths and Increasing Customer Contact’ with over 30 ideas for practical solutions following the overwhelming response he had to his and Sir Norman Lamb’s campaign earlier this year. The campaign led to over 50 face-to-face meetings with housing executives across the UK. You can download your free copy of the guide here.

In this virtual session, James along with Matt and the audience, lifted the lid on what’s working, what’s not, and what urgently needs attention. It covered:

  • The sharp rise in tenant poverty
  • The erosion of external support services
  • Challenges around repairs and recruitment
  • How frontline staff are stepping into social work roles
  • Why leadership and digital training are no longer optional

The session was packed full of interesting ideas and one everyone in the social housing industry should watch. If you missed it, you can listen to the recording below on YouTube or using the following links:
