Greening the supply chain: How it Benefits Everyone

The Social Housing sector has huge ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2050.  This Net Zero target will require eye watering levels of investment.  Inside Housing estimate that the bills for retrofitting existing properties alone will cost the sector over £100bn in the next 30 years.

Yet this is only one component of what will be involved.  Housing providers have thousands of suppliers and the target will only be reached by greening the supply chain at the same time.  Some procurement teams are already starting to consider the carbon footprint of potential suppliers, and are including this as part of the evaluation critieria.  Such a move is only likely to grow in importance.

Planting trees is a simple, yet powerful, way to carbon offset, as well as make a positive impact on the environment and the community. In addition, to reducing the carbon footprint trees provide a range of benefits, from improving local air quality to boosting mental health. Alertacall is working with housing associations to plant 100,000 trees across the country.

As part of this pledge, this month some of the team were at a sheltered housing scheme in Manchester. One Manchester had chosen Alertacall’s ‘Beyond Warden Call’ solution as its replacement for hard wired alarm systems that are Digital Switchover ready.  As part of the Alertacall proposal the company had offered to plant one tree for every resident in receipt of the new services.

In describing the project, Alertacall Chief Operating Officer Adrian Cross said, “It was wonderful to work with the team, both to introduce new services and the improve the surroundings for tenants. Those living in these city centre schemes will now have extra trees and shrubs on scheme which creates a nicer living environment. We worked with the One Manchester team, and residents were engaged and with us, and chatting to everyone when we were working on the schemes.  Our own team were delighted to work with the One Manchester team to help undertake the planting. As our services do not require hard wiring the environmental impact is less, but with our commitment to plant trees to carbon offsetting we are able to provide an even greener alternative. ”
